Candidates should have passed Diplomate of National Board (DNB) Ophthalmology or MS/MD in Ophthalmology under recognized medical collages in India by Medical Council of India (MCI)

Anatomy: Surgical anatomy of vitreous and Vitreo-retinal relationships,
Ultrastructure of retina and vitreous and other relevant anatomy
Physiology of vision, visual pathway, color vision
History taking relevant to Vitreo-retinal Diseases
Methods of fundus examination
Ultrasonography - theory, technique and interpretation
Fundus Fluorescein Angiography – Theory, Technique and Interpretation
Indocyanine green angiography
Optical Coherence Tomography
Electrodiagnostic studies – Electroretinography, electro oculography and
Visual evoked potential- theory, technique and Interpretations
Laser Photocoagulation – Theory and Principles
Medical Retinal Diseases
Vascular retinopathies:

  1. Diabetic Retinopathy
  2. Vascular occlusions
  3. Ocular Ischemic Syndrome
  4. Eales’ disease
  5. Coat’s disease
  6. Sickle cell retinopathy

Degenerative Diseases of Retina:
  1. Retinitis Pigmentosa and Variants, Cone-Rod dystrophies
  2. Gyrate atrophy
  3. Choroidermia

Retinal detachment and related disorders: (Clinical Diagnosis, differential diagnosis, predisposing factors, etiology)
  1. Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment
  2. Tractional retinal detachment

Congenital and childhood disorders:
  1. Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous

Anterior Segment disorders of Importance to Vitreoretinal surgeons
  1. Dislocated lens
  2. Dislocated IOL
  3. After Cataract and other pupillary membranes
  4. Irvine Gass syndrome and Vitreous wick syndrome
  5. Complicated Cataract
  6. Malignant Glaucoma

Macular disorders:
  1. Macular hole

Practical Exposure to the following techniques is required

Examination techniques:
  1. Direct Ophthalmoloscopy
  2. Indirect Ophthalmoscopy with scleral indentation
  3. Slit lamp biomicroscopy using +78 or +90d lens and contact lenses such as Goldmann, Mainster, Panfundoscopic lens
  4. Routine Ophthalmological examination techniques including slit lamp examination, applanation tonometry, Gonioscopy etc

Special Investigations:
  1. B-Scan Ultrasonography
  2. Fundus fluorescein angiography /indocyanine green angiography
  3. Optical coherence tomography
  4. Electro diagnostic studies ( ERG, Multifocal ERG, VEP)

OPD Procedures:
  1. Paracentesis
  2. Intra vitreal injection
  3. Laser Photocoagulation
  4. Trans conjunctival cryopexy


* Didactic lectures – twice a month
* Journal club – once a week
* Discussion on Fluorescein Angiogram/ OCT – Once a week
* Discussion on Ultra sonogram - Once a week
* Case presentation – once a week

* Assist in the outpatient department in the disposal of cases
* Take part in overall patient care
* Perform independently laser photocoagulations both by slit lamps and indirect delivery method
* Aim to present at least one paper in any conference
* Maintain log book with all details as exemplified
* At least one research work leading to publication in peer reviewed journal.
